The Night Bird's Song by wroth The Night Bird's Song by wroth
"... when our love was new, and our hearts were high.
When the day was young, and the nights were long,
and the moon stood still for the night bird's song."

Image Description:

Digital paint, Photoshop CS. In my opinion this is my first real painting, that is not just a study and not relying on photo textures etc.

Made the floral reference photographs myself, the model photo of ~VoodooBiatch used with her very generous permission. You can find some of her modeling stock in Beauty Package 2 at =resurgere, some of my floral stock is also available there.

You can view a step by step production walkthrough of this painting at my sketchbook, which is featured at Creativestem at the moment.

And you can view close up details snippets in my dA scrapbook along with a much more detailed description.

Full viewing is recommend to see the details as ever. Your critiques and feedback are always welcome and if you had painting advice for me that would help a lot. Thank you for looking and for your support!

I like it. I did notice that the flowers were a little more detailed than the girl's face. And the brightness of the girl and the flowers and green lights were all relatively the same. So I tossed it into Photo Shop and darkened the flowers a bit; it made the girl's face stand out much more.

Again; I like it. I just thought I would put forth my observation. If you wanted a particular part of the image to stand out more I can't say, but as it stands now, the flowers and the girl are equal as far as striking the eye...to me.

Best of luck, Blake.

The picture itself is gorgeous, with brilliant details. The idea is rather spooky. However, I do have one thing to comment on - apart from the other critique saying the flowers should be dimmed, the head, which seems to be the focal point of the picture, is quite small. The composition of the picture is a bit poor, and more emphasis could be applied not only by reducing the light from the flowers, but also by making the head bigger in relative comparison to the rest of the picture. Or you could consider making the flowers smaller - whatever works. Good job overall, but more attention in general needs to be drawn to the head, and with the current size, that will be hard to do. The first thing I noticed were the flowers up front.

Beautiful work, though! Gorgeous.

The work you put into this is incredible, I saw the step by step process.

I really like the way the orchids make some sort of crown around her hair but what I ejoyed the most is the softness of her lips and the bright in her eyes :)

I just need to learn to like, act and tap dance and then I think I pretty much have all the bases covered? Heh... Naw I still have a lot to learn before I really can feel like a bad ass painter, but it's a start. And who would have thought back in the day I would even try to be a painter? When I met you I barely did photography.

Shawn

Thank you so much for taking a long time and working this fantastic piece. You've blown me away already and praised me till my face turned all red.
The orchids are beautiful and one of my fav. color is Turquoise. I do not know how you managed to figure that out but the entire concept is beautiful

Its mysterious soft, and very... very.... soul-full.
What is the Night Bird's song, and what does the orchid stand for?

I read there were symbolism in the piece from viewers and I want to know them myself.

<3

Shawn thank you.

:rose: I love cyan and blue, did not know you did but it's a lucky guess.

The title comes from the song I linked to at the top of the description. Originally my idea was to paint this explicitly about Zorya Polunochnaya, but I changed my mind and made it vaguer because that did not fit [you are too young to be her! heh]; but still selected a title that recalled to me time standing still for the midnight star. So the title means, to me, 'what the night slows down for'.

Orchid symbolism varies a lot between of times and culture, in my case the flower symbolizes exotic [in the sense of 'distant' / 'foreign'] and subtleness of beauty, and whiteness symbolizes perfection. Iris symbolism here is related to the rainbow [and the greek goddess Iris] or more specifically in my adaptation the northern lights as a bridge between heavens and earth [some of the Chinese thinking on the butterfly relationship to the iris may have been at the back of my mind as well]... All of which plays into that mysterious feeling I hope.

We'll have to do this again some time :flirty:

I love that song. So achingly beautiful. I must admit I initially clicked on this piece because I wondered if the title was based on it. :blushes:

To my delight, it was! And the piece is stunning. Photograph and painting mesh together beautifully and seamlessly. I particularly love the details around her eyes and on her lips.

I should not be admitting that I love that song too, because it is so girly; but yes I totally love it

Fyi, this is all painting, the photographs where used to look at as I painted not maniped into the work. See the sketchbook perhaps to see it as a work in progress

Oh! My bad. :B All the more amazing, then! I totally thought the flowers and the Aurora Borealis were photographs. Beautiful what you did with them. I love WIPs; I will have to go look at those now. :)
